JANUARI
1/1 - ** Premiere
Roxen, udden
60' x (6.2 + fs) - GPS-speed
The prognose fell a part. The highlights were the joint rescue mission of Björn and this years first GPS-session. 27.33 knots (2s) wasn't anything to write home about. BUT, it was enough to get on to the 2007 top ten rankings, at least for a couple of hours! For a little longer I was also the fastest in Sweden. Well, well, the speed goal for 2007 still is to clock 35 knots (2s).

Happy new 2007!

The howling winds woke mw up early. Took it easy and sms:d Douglas and Oscar. Out at udden the wind was over 10 m/s WNV, shifting towards NW as it would turn out. Oscar thought there was too much north in the westerly winds and too gusty so he went back home!? Went out for a couple of speed runs and managed to clock some decent times - the display showed 33.4 knop (2s). Two weeks into '07 and already a PR! Yeah!!!
There's definitely more to it in that narrow board!
It's tough when it's cold, it's cold in january!

In the autumn of 1987 lake Roxen was hit by a real "hurricane". Back then I was on a Klepper 272 and a Top Sails 3.6 m2. That was pretty maxed for my sleek 60 kg.

Early cheese roll attempt - 1987
Some odd 20 years later it was time for another windy day. This time with a smaller board, a wave board of 75 liters instead of 100 liters, and a NS Voodoo 3.7 m2.
I've never been out wind surfing in such harsh conditions. A couple of degrees above zero Celsius and around 5-6 in the air made for extreme conditions.
I started out on my narrow slalom board and a 4.7 - it was time to break the 35 knot barrier. Tjena! On the way in again, tail wheelieing all the way, the wind disappeared 50 meters from the shore and I had to swim in. Up on dry land I noticed that I had passed my theoretical max pulse (220-age41=179) and reached 182 pulse beats per minute.
I swapped down to my 4.2 and my small wave board which worked out much better. For a short while. The wind increased even more. Now it was time for another premiere. The 3.7 m2 premiere! I haven't sailed such a small sail since 1987. And today I wheigh 20 kg more.
The survival sailing wasn't the most fun sailing I've had. Regarding the extreme conditions I rode with big security margins.
A video grab from Jan-E. Pretty good height, unfortunately a gust hit me and I hit the mast right on the head. Luckily I wore a helmet.

It's not everyday the waves are head high on a lake like Roxen.

240' x (6.2 & 5.3 + ice board)
Suuuper conditions!!! We just sailed and sailed for four hours straight. I managed a PR of 40.72 knots (2s)! It didn't even feel fast. The ice was so smooth!
It was a shame having all that snow when the ice was so good!

Vanilla ice has nothing on ice boarding!

P g a vindskuggan fick jag simma in 200 meter med hela skiten. Utmattad var ordet för dagen. Resultatet, 5 minuters seglande och 31 minuters simmande.

A premiere in the Nässja region, south of Vadstena. A bit gusty, but I never changed sail size. The wind came straight on shore, with a tad better riding angle towards the points. Managed to pull of a couple of ok-ish frontside topturns. Backside riding dominated together with som really good jump ramps. The biggest sets were around two meters. By the launch site the waves only reach knee high.

Oscar, Douglas, Andreas, Anders, Gustav, C G - everybody was there! All that was missing was the wind! I managed to pump into planing a couple of times. In true desperation I even tried to get the Kona to blast away - with little success. Freddie told me today that he want some more pictures, I'll try some harder when the conditions kick off.

Oscar was kind enough to lend me his already rigged NS Daytona 8.3 sail. A win-win-solution since I didn't have to rig and he could go straight home. Really light winds i warm sunny weather. The sweat was pouring down my back. Swapped gear with Jan-E and had a go with his Formula set up. It's amazing how fast it's possible to go in such light winds.

The wind delivered at a higher level than the prognoses! OK conditions, but a bit gusty. I choose to schlog a bit on my big wave board and do some loop exercises rather than rigging bigger and ride my bigger board. When writing this the day after I've caught my first Roxen-cold for the season.

Wow, what a day! I've never seen so many peopledo for it so hard. Gustav blew my mind with a perfect end over end forward loop - on a lake! Mats. Jonas, Oscar and myself sort of tried some forwards as well, inspired by Gustav. With various success. Forwards are mind killers! In the beginning of my session I had some speed runs. The display peaked at 34.9 knots! For some reason the recording didn't work though - BUMMER!

Good winds during night. Didn't manage to go to sleep until two o'clock. Still woke up at 6.30. The wind was blowing harder so off we went after a nights sleep at Uffe's "Strandhyddan". I started off with the 5.3 and my light wind wave board - I managed to pull off 5 forward tries and one backie. Great fun! After a while the wind dropped and I opted for my 6.2. Before going home we visited Surfer Paradise surf shop to let Oscar do some serious shopping.

Took some speedruns and bettered my PB for 2s by 0.2 knots. Stressed to rig down and get back home in time. Oscar showed up, rigged 6.2, changed into his wetsuit. He got skunked! Timing.

Formula for one hour. Went up to Ekängen and said hi to the others that were bathing. Took a ride over to SAAB-badet and went back to udden to end the session. Jan-E turned up and we went out for our first "match race". He was clearly faster on babord, but on starboard for some reason I managed to tag along just fine. Felt good after just some three outings on my formula gear.

14/6 - **** Massive

Massive winds. Massive jumps. Massive pain! First me and my colleges crushed the opposition in the traditional football game. After that I put the pedal to the metal and headed for Roxen. No, not really. The forecast was solid and i took a nice ride to the lake only to find Mats rigging down his 4.8 sail. I took my 4.7 and my speed board for a little speed session. Had pretty good speed but was bouncing around more than on my last speed sesh. Never the less, right now I'm waiting to get my log checked by the RTK. I might have reached this seasons speed goal. After a while the winds started to really crank. Time for some quality 4.2 time! The first hour the wind was consistent, both in strength and direction. The ramps were excellent! Logged some serious air time. But after a while the wind started to swing back and forth which messed up the choppy waves into motor cross carnage. Still great fun. Worked up some guts and went for a backie on my un natural tackv - starboard. Went around faster than ever and let go of everything 3/4 of the loop and landed perfectly feet first. Spotted a good ramp and went for cheese roll - OUCH!!! Overrotated and tweaked my left ankle. To prevent breaking my foot I had to contort my back which sent a stinging signal of pain "up stairs". So today I have both back and ankle pain. Oscar also went for some backies and was as close as they come on one special occasion. He went all the way around and lost his boom grip upon impact - RAD!
Hopefully C-G will have some nice pictures in store. Later...

Got out really late due to some "points labor". Only had a window of 45 minutes riding time. Anders R told me to go for a 6-ish sail. Nah, I'll go for my 5.3 and some light wind loop training. On the water I was just about powered up most of the time. It was PERFECT loop training weather! Nice little ramps on starboard tack. Did some "look-back-jumps" for warm up. Then I just went for it... and got swung around all the way with the board still attached. Yes! Didn't quite manage to get back up on any of my attempts. But now I'm progressing. Soon I'll have 'em wired!!!

The forecast said zero wind. After lunch a summer breeze started. I went out to Roxen and planed for the first 25 minutes. Jan-E showed up as I schlogged back to the shore. He managed to wreck his sail before going home just a bit mad. Understandable. I want wind!

The day that everything fell in place. I was on the water with my formula gear for five minutes and I didn't even get planing. Then WHAM! From 2 m/s to 9 m/s in the matter of minutes. I wasn't even sure I would be able to get back in. I took a chance with my big wave board and my 5.3 sail. A bit optimistic. I joined Oscar for som freestyl fun with my 6.2. Half an hour later I was overigged and got my 5.3. I repeated my loop exercises from my last session. I was pretty close to nail the forward. The started to really kick in and soon I had my small wave board and 4.7 sail. Having tried the forward on bigger kit made it quite easy to pull off my first ever succesful forward loop - what a rush! I'm soo stoked. The key to success for me has been the following:
1. Dry land exercises - "The Ian Leonard move"
2. "No board loops"
3. "Look-back-jumps" - The key for me
The look-back-jump helped me a lot because it makes it heaps easier to commit and really turn the head where I want to go. Around! It also accentuate the dip of the boards nose which also helps the rotation.
I really love the feeling of looping.

The Kona OD is probably the best thing that has ever happened to Formula racing. I went out with Oscar in winds that would've had me planing all the time on my formula gear. Instead we were bogging upwind - BORING! Kona ain't for me. It's great that the Kona class is attracting a lot of participants. BUT, I think they will soon get bored and turn to formula. At least those that has a reasonable level of technique. Right now I'm hoping for some kick ass winds for the week end.

Since I had been sitting in the car yesterday because of my fever I had some catching up to do. I went out with my 4.2 sail but that was just too small so after a while I had to walk back and get my 4.7 which worked out great. The conditions were lumpy with peaks all over the place. Not much quality wave riding to be had. We decided to relocate up north during lunch.
Åsa, Åsa

80 km and lunch later we met up with Björn and Mats in the parking lot. 4.2 was the right size according to our friends. Oscar and i started att the inner stone reef but decided to try the outer reef after three runs. The outer reef wasn't up to it's usual standard. Nevertheless we managed to catch a few decent waves. Oscar pulled off a nice aerial. An hour later we headed back to the inner reef. This is a gnarly spot that breaks on large pebbles. The wave breaks close to the stone beach and has one particular stone that sits about a foot or less under the surface right where you ride the wave. At one occasion on the way out I managed to smack into this particular stone straight on - WHAM! Ten minutes later the fin screw let go and I had the fin pointing straight backwards. A new fin screw later I was back in the water. I had some great wave rides sqeezing in five or six turns - really getting into the flow zone. The last hour and a half I was way overpowered, but I were too tired to get my 3.7 sail. When I finally got back to shore i was totally exhausted. Oscar found my juat laying beside my gear. Happy... and broken. One sprined thumb, one sprained little toe, multiple cuts on my bare feet, bruises all over. Soo much fun!
